Advanced Manufacturing

 The Bluegrass Region is well positioned to build upon its advanced manufacturing sectors, some of which have direct links to sectors such as biotechnology product manufacturing and renewable energy machinery. The region’s strong transportation network helps serve manufacturing efforts, allowing for the easy import of component supplies and the distribution of finished products. Lexington is focusing on assisting firms in expansion of research and development activities and enhancing product lines. One example of advanced manufacturing in the Bluegrass Region is Toyota Motor Manufacturing.

To increase the region’s capability in advanced manufacturing, Lexington and Louisville have recently initiated an innovative partnership called the Bluegrass Economic Advancement Movement (BEAM). This project will develop a joint regional business plan, leveraging our strength in advanced manufacturing to support the growth of jobs in the sector and position Kentucky as global leader.

 The Brookings Institution, a nonprofit public policy organization, will bring substantial expertise and knowledge to this task. The project will use Brookings’ “Metropolitan Business Plan” framework to develop a comprehensive economic development plan designed to nurture and support manufacturers and their supply chains while building a world-class workforce in Kentucky. The goals: quality job creation and increases in export activity.
