Lexington is Central and Eastern Kentucky’s regional hub for business and industry. In 2010, Lexington’s Business and Professional Services sector employed 22,327 people. This industry includes legal, architectural, engineering, consulting, and real estate firms, as well as back-office support operations, accounting and payroll services, and processing facilities. The business service industry leader in Lexington is Xerox, which employs approximately 2,700 people.
The University of Kentucky’s Gatton College of Business offers undergraduate, graduate, and PhD programs, providing Lexington with a local highly educated workforce in this industry. During the 2009-2010 school year, the program had an enrollment of 2,810 students. Along with an educated workforce, Lexington is served by a sophisticated telecommunications network to meet the demands of large corporations.
The primary market niches in Lexington are research and development, financial services, and advanced manufacturing. In addition to these niches, Commerce Lexington seeks to add more services in support of entrepreneurs, including legal counsel, accounting, mentoring, and managerial activities.
